Small Tortoiseshell
The peppermint's in bloom!

Our butterflies like the flowers, too. Yesterday, three small tortoiseshells came to visit.

Glamour shot of a moth I found in the wash basin.

EDIT: Some of the pictures didn't show up at first, re-added them. Also, here's a picture of a spider family: Click!

Our plants were all really late this year, only started getting green when the entire neighbourhood was already in bloom. The only thing that saved them from being thrown out was my laziness because I thought that everything had died over the winter. Looks like I was wrong on all counts.

Thanks. ♥ The balcony boxes make it really easy to get close to them. :)

Beautiful! And what an awesome shot of that moth! ♥

Do you have a useful page where to look up butterflies? I know only two or three, but with our buddleia we're having more and more varieties I'd love to be able to name. I have no idea, for example, how this one is called - it's no tortoiseshell, is it?

Thank you! :D

Not really, sorry. :( For the ones I don't know I usually either google "common butterflies Germany" or something and then scroll through the pictures until I find them. Didn't help me identify that moth, though. If I got a really good look I type in a description, sometimes that helps.

Your butterfly looked a bit like a Weißling to me at first, but is, of course, too dark. I think there is another butterfly that looks similar but is brown, but I can't remember the name. :(

I must shamefully confess that it didn't even ocur to me to google that... thanks for helping out my mushy brain. I found it right away, it's a "Kaisermantel", a silver-washed fritillary.
