Hummus

Apparently, people of my race like this (anyone else think that this blog is often really self-congratulatory rather than satiric? I'd have hoped for more satire), so I thought I'd give it a try. It turned out very tasty, and now I'm wondering what other kinds of spreads and dips there are that could be tasty - I'm thinking about giving mushroom dip a price.

Anyone want to share a recipe? I'd be grateful.

At first I found it quite humorous. The satire isn't too heavy; it's more self-deprecating, I think, as the author's white and is just poking fun at the quasi-yuppiedom of America.

Now that's it's caught on and tons of people love the site (and also because there's a book), it's lost its luster for me.

Yeah, I really enjoyed some of the posts on there and the remarks he makes on hipsterdom, but by now, I often feel that the self-deprecation is not really self-deprecating enough any more. But then, I often have problems with that particular brand of humour, so it might be me.

Yeah. It can make people a bit touchy - at first I got mad with it before I realized it was done the way it was. I think that's why he does it. But sometimes he just gets way too general. At least with things like sweaters and dogs. They're not 'white-only' stereotypes!

Ugly sweater parties... and David Sedaris... yeah, now THEY're more popular amongst white hipsters.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Still, sometimes I think he could do a lot better.

There's an entry on David Sedaris? I need to check that one out.

Oh, nom. Once more I realise that a bimonthly trip to our local Turkish bakery is not enough to discover all the tasty things Turkish cuisine has to offer.

Yeah, I think stuffwhitepeoplelike is overrated; it's...well, very white.

Hummus is extremely delicious, though. Many people who like hummus also like baba ganoush (I don't). I'm really fond of tzatziki, though. I make a super-simple one with just plain yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and a pinch of salt, but there are more elaborate recipes out there.

Yep, "very white" just about nails it. I wish a non-white person could write such a blog, it might turn out a lot better.

I can't really eat garlic or onions, so I can't eat tzatziki which includes it. I haven't tried baba ganoush yet, it looks interesting, I might give that a shot.

There's Stuff Asian People Like: http://www.asian-central.com/stuffasianpeoplelike/

It's not so much intended to be satirical, but it's really interesting.

Hmm, yeah, I'm not sure tzatziki would taste good without the garlic. I'm trying to think of other dips....

Oh, interesting. I'd be curious about "stuff white people like" written by someone who isn't white, too, I'd imagine they'd be less prone to be self-congratulatory, for one, but there'd probably be even more people who'd take offence and think it's reverse racism or some nonsense.

Tzatziki without garlic doesn't work, really. I tried to substitute the garlic with fresh peppermint once. It did turn out refreshing, but definitely not tzatziki. For today, I'm trying to do something with mushrooms and silken tofu.

There's raita, which doesn't always include alliums:

I love baba ghanoush! And it's quite simple. I can dig you up a recipe that makes a very good one. Although hummus and baba ghanouj both traditionally have quite a bit of garlic...
