because we were poor students when we married,
Same for us, or rather "unemployed post-grad" in case of my partner. Our parents would have paid for them, as they did with the wedding (we were and are really, really blessed with our families), but we found hat at least the rings should be bought from what we could afford.
We had wanted silver rings, too, but kind of weren't allowed by the people in the shop. So they gave us white gold. We wanted simple bands and got them, but they became more and more golden over time, and one day simply decided to get what we wanted - silver, and possibly not industry-made - when the occasion arise. And now we have!:o)

My youngest sister has a great variety as well, and we're thinking about doing the same. While she and her husband could and did afford "normally" priced rings (meaning expensive *g* ), they both care much for for a tattoo they're wearing underneath the ring: a Celtic braid/knot pattern, tattooed like a ring. I envy her that! I don't wear my ring all the time, since it's too wide to be comfortable in some situations, and I keep huting myself with the cabochon at night. Also, the hammered pattern of the band sufers if it gets into contact with other metall or hard surfaces, so we take the rings off for most kind of works in the garden and the house. A tattoo would be a great addition...
My sister also wears tattoos for her girls, both at the base of her neck so she can hide them under job clothing. She's having the sum of digits (Quersumme) for each name of her children, one under the other. So there are simply numbers, in a good-to-look-at typeface.
