Crocky and I went on a trip to Verden today. We were actually going to look at an abandoned ammunition factory in a village near Verden, but then found the entire area roped off and warning signs saying those going there were in mortal danger, so we opted out.

I am now a bit sadder that the school in Verden that I applied with back in the day did not want me, the town is very pretty.

The town hall.

Road next to it. I love how the newer houses and the ones from earlier centuries actually try to blend - there are none of the shiny glass fronts that they put up in Hamburg expecting them to blend in.

This is apparently going to be pulled down soon, and I feel bad for this house even though it looks dangerous, it's so old and has survived for so long.

Tactile map of Verden with tourist information in braille. The church you can see in front here is the one whose spire you can see in the picture above this one, the large structure in the background is the cathedral, which is coming up next.

Six of the seven virtues - temperance, fortitude, hope, faith, charity, prudence, and, in theory, justice, which is missing.

This is a former sexton who used the funds of the cathedral for personal purposes and who, when an inspection of the accounts came up, swoere he did not do it and said the devil should fetch him if he had. The devil promptly did come and tried to throw the sexton out of a window, but the money he had stolen and he himself somehow turned to stone half-way through and there, moral: don't steal money from the church, otherwise this is the expression you're going to be stuck with.

Inner courtyard.

Central nave.

Newer organ.

Prayer candle tree. They also had a very depressing book next to it into which people had written heartbreaking things - asking God to look after amazing numbers of dead or dying loved ones, people praying for strength to get through terrible illnesses. It was very humbling and I was too intimidated to write anything myself.

St. Peter brandishing his key.

Bishop Berthold von Landsberg's tomb slab with a a nice carving of the man himself.

My confirmation verse on a house (psalm 37:5)
