Does anyone know a person called "Flaubert"?
We're discussing "Flaubert's Parrot" by Barnes in my course on Postmodern Fiction. Not that anyone has to know him. There are many people no one knows, and perhaps Flaubert is one them. But... I daresay at least our students of literature ought to know he existed. I mean, I am not a student of French literature either, but... Well. No one has to have read his novels - or has to know they were novels at all. No one has to know he was born in 1821 in Rouen. Perhaps no one has to know he was the author of Madame Bovary.
But... I thought they knew at least that the Gustave Flaubert is not a contemporary from England called "Flawbit".
