I was going to make an entry about my birthday, which was really great, but there is something which is too disturbing to think about that right now. I'll add the entry I was going to make later on.
On Sunday morning at 2.30 am, my rabbit had a seizure. It was horrible, she was just tossing and thrashing around in her cage. I thought she was going to die.
I was just going to call the emergency number of a vet when she stopped and just lay there, breathing too fast, eyes rolling around wildly, heart racing.
My mother-the-biologist didn't know what to do, either.
In the morning Molly was alright again, still moving rather jerkily, but apart from that, everything was ok. She hasn't had another seizure since.
Today, we went to the vet to see what she's got. With many "ah"s and "uhm"s he told me that my rabbit is suffering from the "louping ill", or Drehkrankheit.
For whatever reason, I thought that was an ailment usually associated with sheep. But she's got it anyway, and only 2 out of 20 rabbits are cured.
Which means that my rabbit is most probably going to die in the next two weeks and is also very likely to have another seizure.
The worst part about this is that other animals can get the germs as well, but what effect it has on them hasn't been discovered yet. Or if there is any, in fact. Some scientists - three teams worldwide, that is - believe that there is a connection between the germs an a chronic inflammation of the kidneys. The others are apparently quite cueless.
Great. How very reassuring.
Our family includes Sevvie, the tomcat, Dax, the dog (Pudelpointer), Quirrel and Domino/Utnapishtim, the two guinea pigs and Koko, the budgie. I don't think I'll have to worry about the zillions of guppies, but what about Sevvie, Dax and the pigs?
I so hope Molly will be alright again. She is six and a half, which is not exactly young for a house rabbit, and it is not a painful illness, either. She's only dizzy at the moment because her sense of balance is affected, apart from that she is perfectly alright again.
Today is really a crap day.
To make things worse, June will be a Crocky-free month. She left today, and we Hamburgians will only see her again in July.
Living in the Middle ages must have been better, all your friends weren't that far away. 180 kilometers. Alright, it is not that far, but... it feels like a lightyear to me right now. *sigh*
Alright, then. Will try to feed Molly her medicine now. She hates it and takes revenge by scratching and biting me enthusiastically.
