Btw: Are you already starting to have a little accent, after almost 6 months over there? ;) - Always wanted to know.

Oh, it just means "I don't know." ken: cf. dt. "kennen", only in another sense of the word. Scots underwent different processes of language change than StE, and so it retained certain lexical items StE got rid of a few hundred years ago. It also underwent different phonological changes, some areas of Scotland, for example, seem to be quite unaware that there was such a thing as the vowel shift. It's fascinating. Scottish English and Scots is a whole lot closer to German than StE.

You differentiate between Scots and Scottish English... Does Scots still count as a form of English, or is it sortuva language of its own, like I think "Erse" is, for example?
