Highland Tour Part II
Monday, July 24th, 2006 06:43 pmSo, here comes part two of our amazing Highland Tour, with a photo attack of pictures from the bug-ridden Pittentrail and the beautiful Skye, the prettiest Island on the entire planet.
17 July, Day 3

This is the glen in which Pittentrail is located, and that is the trainstation Lower Rogart, or Pittentrail. We were told the hostel would be "on site". Hm.

Whee, I always wanted to take a picture like that. Fine, my dream location would be somewhere in the desert, not in a glen in the Scottish Highlands, but you don't always get what you want.

And that, my friends, is the hostel. isn't it gorgeous? We were in the middle of the green train.

I would have preferred that one, but apparently the door did not really close, so it was probably just as well.

I loved the tomatoes in the phone booth.

The inside of the train.

The inside of a compartment like ours. I think this is our neighbour's or something. They were so much fun to stay in and much more comfortable than I had anticipated.
We went on a bike tour the second day to explore this pretty glen, but that was not the best of ideas because the stupid horse flies are apparently attrackted by hairspray!
Soon, there were around a hundred of them swarming after us. I kid you not, at first, there were only ten. Then, when I turned around on my bike to see where the buzzing noise came from, there were about thirty. Then another swarm suddenly appeared and started following Crocky. We tried to out-drive them on our bikes, but that did not work as flies are faster than bikes, especially if you have to be on the look-out for cars.
In the end we just stopped and took cover, only to realise that staying put was not the best of plans, especially as twenty of the flies decided to have a picknick on my legs. It was terrible, swatting did not help anymore, and to make things even worse, one of the chains jumped out so we had to walk home. Curiously enough they stopped following us around after a while, so things might have been a lot better had we just walked. Back home I fretted a lot about the chain because even though I know how to put chains back in I did not know with this bike, but it was actually much easier than with mine at home.

Unfortunately the weather was rather bad the second half of the day, so we could not go for a ride again. Probably better, after having been attacked and eaten by midges and horse-flies.
We did go for a walk after the rains had stopped.

The house I want to live in. Well, after some very serious refurbishing, maybe. I love the bridge!
18 July, Day

One of the reasons we wanted to stay in Pittentrail apart from the landscape was Dunrobin. Dunrobin is a beautiful, but not very old castle near Golspie. It was built in 1845 and looks beautiful. There is a very beautiful walk along the beach up to the castle.

Stitching is still fun, even though this one is decidedly wonky.

Another part to go, that one featuring Skye and bits of Glenfinnan and the way back.
My Digicam has once more decided to show me a "card locked" message instead of working properly, although the card is not locked physically. It is strange, I have never had any troubles with my memory cards before, they usually worked perfectly. I am scared about that, to be honest, repairing those things is usually pretty expensive...
I hope it is just a case of the bad influence I have on technology...
