University of Hamburg's Registry's Stupidity: 1, Moth: 0.

My university LOST. The copies of the certificates (Zwischenprüfungszeugnis for German) I handed in for my application.

The 15th was the final deadline for handing them in.

And they LOST. the huge, A4 envelope in which the copies where, and now my application won't even be considered.

I can enter an objection, but since the only thing I can object to is them not having my certificates, which they in fact do not have, it won't do any good. Which the person who's handling my application already told me. If I enter an objection which is not successful, I also have to pay fees. And it will not be successful unless the envelope is found.

I've been there today and talked to two of the most unhelpful, unfriendly employees of our university, and all they could tell me is that if I handed it in, it must be there, and if it is not, they don't know where it could be, that there is no way of finding out what could have happened to the envelope, that there is nothing they can do and that is not their responsibility, either, could I leave now, please, and good day.

The last person I talked to effectively threw us out (Crocky had come along for moral support) of the building.

The friendly porter I talked to before also said that it had never happened before that they had lost an envelope, so it must have been misdirected or accidentally thrown away. Which apparently HAS happened before.

Lovely.

And now all I can do is wait for the uni to find my envelope, which is unlikely, as they get such a lot of mail every day and it's been weeks since I handed it in, so they won't have it lying around somewhere. If it was not misdirected. Which is my last hope. It is probably in the bin already and all the work I put into being able to get hold of this certificates, the nights I spent working on the two term papers I had to hand in early for that, all the effort that went into convincing my professors to allow me to hand them in and to correct them early, all the effort that went into getting professors to sign the certificate so I could hand it in on time and become a teacher was for nothing.

Still, since no one is willing to tell me exactly what could have happened to this letter, and since everyone keeps telling me that had I handed it in, it should be there, and that they don't know nor care what could have gone wrong, there is no chance for me. I am a nuisance to them.

Awesome, isn't it? And the porter was the only one who I didn't want to behead by the end of my fruitless trip to the uni main building. I'll call them again tomorrow, asking a few more people of what could have happened to the envelope, but the porter said that it probably will have been thrown away if it wasn't misdirected. However, since there was a letter in it stating it's exact purpose, that is highly unlikely.

What I keep thinking about is that soon we will be paying these guys to be as incompetent as they are (well, of course the money will never reach them, but it's called Studiengebühren). What on earth FOR, I wonder?

Hell, the thing is, I'd be more than willing to go through the piles and piles of garbage myself to find that envelope, I'd only need someone to point me to it, but they won't even do that.

All I have been asking today is what happens to the letters in the blue box in the foyer once people come to pick it up, and not a single one of the people I asked could answer me that question. Seriously, they ought to know where their blasted mail comes from! I hope the person in the student's office will be able to tell me more tomorrow. I hate this university.

Did you know that other universities tried out StiNe as well, i.e. the Bucerius Law School, found it was crappy and pretty much sent it back without paying anything, and that our uni is the only one who actually kept it and is paying money for it?

They were rude because the office hour of the office that deals with the applications was between 5 and 6 p.m., therefore very close to the time when they close up, so everybody who was there was incredibly frustrated and longing to go home. Still - I don't get it either, especially the last person was unbelievable - she told us that she did not know what our problem was and then that she did not know what we were to do, and then got up, held open the door to her office, and then followed us and held open the door to the building for us. Un-fucking-believable.

And no one knows where my letter is or believes me when I tell them I handed it in, even. It's lovely.

So? They have one hour when they're there for students and then are pissed off because someone comes along close to closing time? They are there for SERVICE, for goodness sake. They have no damn right throwing you (or anyone else for that matter) out just because it's nearly the end of their workday. Especially when they fucked something up. How DARE they to not believe you?

I'm with Aix on this one. Keep up the pressure. Be there everyday. Take it up the ladder. Get statements from those professors who marked you assignements early. Make sure they know you are not going away. They need to take this seriously and they'll only do it if you are constantly under their noses.

Of course, being someone who avoids conflict myself, I understand how difficult all that would be.

I will. Well, I will be there every day - starting on Monday. Today I'm at school, and tomorrow the place is pretty much closed, or at least the relevant offices, so the only chance I have for talking to the people I will need to talk to is on Monday. And I am going to be going up the ladder.

It is, it is, but no one realises it is. They made it more than plain that this case was one in a million and therefore of no importance for them, that there is no need for putting any effort into this case as they are overworked as it is. At least that's what the last lady, the one who escorted us out, made it sound like. Their attitude makes it sound as though there was really no way in the world they'd ever be able to find this envelope again - that it's probably gone for good and therefore they needn't spend time with it.

And since I have no means of proving that I handed in the thing because there was no possibility for me to obtain one (and I even asked!!), there is nooo hope, and they don't have to waste their time on it, and won't. (WON'T. Now, please leave, pesky, annoying little underling.)

Honestly, how stupid can it get there? - First STINE, and now this!? - Stuff getting lost is the exact reason obviously both of us don't send anything via mail but hand it in in person. And now this doesn't fucking work anymore either? - No words, really... I SO hope that it'll still turn out right, at the end.

Where'd you go in the first place? - Studierendensekretariat? - Bunch of idiots there, I can tell you. The only competent and friendly person there is Mr Axel Schoeler, the chief of staff, I believe. Even though I dunno if this'll help much, I'd try and talk to him... At least he'll listen to what you have to say, I think. Unbelievable... UN-BE-LIEVABLE... :(

Btw.: What about the bloody tuition fees? - SoSe07 or WS 07/08? - The last remittance slip I got still didn't include them... Still the old Semesterbeitrag.

On Monday I'll order me the next TANs for STINE... Wonder if this (if anything at all) is gonna work. :( - Yesterday I even read that due to all these complications our department wanted to do paper applications again, at least until STINE was fixed, but they got denied... Why, oh why...
