Hässlichkeiten

Thanks for the congratulations on getting the flat, everyone!

A literal translation of the word "Hässlichkeit" (IPA: ˈhɛslɪçɪçkaɪ̯t)  would be "ugliness". I've never heard it anyone use a lot, but my mother keeps using the word to describe things in Hannover, as in, "Das Ihme Zentrum ist von ausgesuchter Hässlichkeit." ( "The Ihme Zentrum is of supreme ugliness").

When I went to the viewing of our new flat the areas I walked through reminded me of why I usually dislike Hanover and why I think the city is really, really ugly. It was raining, everything was grey and cold and sad, with one of those headache inducing white skies. The part of the city I walked through on my way to the flat are not exactly in the tourist area, either. In fact, it's part of the city's "redlight district", which in this case boils down to a handful of dodgy hotels offering exotic massages behind the main station.

Since I've already posted a few pretty pictures of Hanover, I felt like posting (more representative) ugly ones, too.




This is our new home. The exterior did not really convince me, but the flats are really pretty, and comfy.





























What we need to do now is find a weekend to move, which is much more difficult than it sounds, what with all the music stuff that Crocky's got on the weekends.

Ist ein Universalproblem. Der Flur zu meiner Kölner Wohnung sieht auch Ars** aus, aber drinnen geht's dann wieder.

Selbstmordparadies trifft's.

Von Köln weiß ich gar nicht, wie da so die erschwinglichen Wohngegenden aussehen. Ist das überwiegend so abenteuerlich, oder hast du nur eine besonders schöne Gegend erwischt? Oder ist es nur dein Flur?

Nur mein Flur. Ich wohne im alten jüdischen Viertel mit Synagoge und Park vor der Haustür. Mich stören nur die vielen Penner, die tagtäglich von Abfalleimer zu Abfalleimer ziehen, um Pfandflaschen zu sammeln. Armut ist zwar keine Schande, aber sich in verschlissenen Klamotten am helllichten Tag an einer Kirche zu erleichtern und trotzdem penetrant nach Bier und Urin zu müffeln, ab da hört dann meine Toleranz auf.

Ja, Hamburg ist schöner. Ausgesucht hätte ich's mir auch nicht, aber Rebecca muss da ja noch eine Weile studieren, darum geht's wohl nicht anders.

Auf Zeit kann mans wohl ertragen. Hier gibts ja auch genug hässliche Ecken. Außerdem wiegt die Anwesenheit der Liebsten doch mehr als das äußere Umfeld.

Na, Hamburg hat auch Gegenden, die so aussehen - die sind nur bei uns nicht direkt hinter dem Hauptbahnhof. :)

Als ich 2002 zwei Monate in Hamburg auf Trickfilmpraktikum war, bin ich im "Balkanviertel" abgestiegen. So schäbig will ich nie wieder wohnen! Obwohl ich großen Wert darauf lege, zumindest die Wohnung als solche heimelig zu haben, war's da innen wie außen Ars**. Das "Badezimmer" - the horror, the horror ...
