Broomstick Lace

A while ago I came across an "Athenian Scarf" that had a very strange and intricate-looking pattern which I forgot about because what I could just about do was a chain stitch and some pot holders in single crochets.
Now, a bit later, I found this again and also found out that it is called a "broomstick lace". It looks like this:

And as everything that I tackle in this woolly adventure that I'm on, it's really easy, otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it. YouTube has video tutorials of this here. I'm not using that kind of intimidating-looking "knitting needle" (what can you knit with that? It looks like something you'd take vampire hunting), I'm using the handle of the plunger that Crocky uses as a mute for her trombone. That's actually supposedly why it's called "broomstick lace", because you use the handles of broomsticks for it, and thus quite a witchy pursuit.

Date: Sunday, February 9th, 2014 08:42 pm (UTC)The difference yarn makes was a huge discovery for me. So far, I've only used the cheap yarn that I picked up in bulk at real, but this I bought at an actual wool store. And gosh, it looks SO much better.

Date: Saturday, February 8th, 2014 10:52 pm (UTC)Thanks for sharing the idea and tutorial; I'll save it for a try sometime. I have never delved into the crocheting adventure beyond potholders, cat toys and some doll clothes, but this is tempting even me. And since I recently am becoming _quite_ fond of scarves... (have you seen the handpainted silk one I've just treated myself to at etsy? ♥ ) The blue wild silk one I knitted last year has been my favourite winter garment,
Hmm, come to think of it.. my Slashy Valentine fic is done, my B2MeM fic should be easy, no reason to not sign up on ravelry any longer. On the other hand, I've just started working at my NaNo story... *ponders*
ETA: if you happen to come across an online wool store selling linen and silk yarns, would you mind to share? I'm searching for a beautiful green and/or grey shade to redo my silk scarf in that colour, as the blue colour doesn't really fit with my outfits.

Date: Sunday, February 9th, 2014 08:48 pm (UTC)I'm using Lana Grossa Bingo Mélange Merinowolle (50g in 124, 244 and 228), and I'm thinking of splurging and buying something with more silk in it, but I'm worried because holy cow, silk can be expensive.
I'm looking for a good store myself. So far I've used up all the wool that I picked up in bulk at such lofty establishments as Woolworth and real,-, the wool for the project above came from a local wool store. I like touching and really seeing the wool before I buy it. I did order up a Bändchengarn at Amazon for another broomstich lace project, though, so there's that. I also plan on looking into ebay for vendors spinning and dying their own and DaWanda, who may have wool, too.
Let me know when you sign up! :D
