Summary: "That's where you're going. A special school for freaks. You and that Snape boy… weirdos, that's what you two are. It's good you're being separated from normal people. It's for our safety." - Not a happy memory, needless to say.
A/N: I've been wanting to do something Pensieve-related for a while now, as I'm wondering what Severus did with the memories he had of Lily after her untimely demise. If a Pensieve serves to preserve memories as well as organise them it's likely to me that he'd be keeping some of his Lily-memories there.

A/N: I believe Severus Snape killed during his DE days, though I respect other readings of the character. Though this is, as always, not very explicit, I put this behind a cut because I believe it can still be potentially upsetting.

A/N:  Severus and Minerva being haunted by the ghosts of their past - Lily and Dougal. Loved ones who died remain a part of you, and navigating a relationship around those still half-with you must be pretty challenging. Yes, I caved in and did something Pottermore-backstory-related and kitschily indulgent. Apologies!

mothwing: An image of a snake on which is written the quote, "My love for you shall live forever- you, however, did not" from A Series of Unfortunate Events (Geekiness)
I'm usually late with recs and such, so scroll past if you have seen these already.

1. Tigerbeatdown: "G. R. R. Martin is creepy" - putting into words what I've thought about the series for years. It's one of the series that I get as 24/7 kinkster Fantasy series, but not as mainstream Fantasy without the niche SSC context or a warning label.

2. If you haven't updated your knowledge in 2009 what you learned about female reproductive anatomy at school is probably outdated and not as awesome as reality

3. McGonagall and Umbridge, a new piece by ~ehay. Her Minerva's cheekbones are as delightful as ever.

4. If you haven't already, check out The Half-Life by *Sigune, a watercolour portrait of Snape.

5. Though I'm not a Snarry fan I can recommend Cordiality and comfort of my new home, which has amazing light.

6. ~LadyMacbeth1755 has the four heads of houses as silhouettes here

7. I'm late with this rec, but if you haven't already, drop everything and read In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning by [livejournal.com profile] atdelphi, which is hauntingly beautiful and powerful.

I have to try keeping closer tabs on my list. Most of the books I read during the first half of the year are on my Oyo - which died in November, which makes it harder to piece together what I've been reading. Though since the books I read and forget probably shouldn't count, anyway, this list works just as well. The bold titles are my top seven of this year's books.

This is a fairly unorganised collection of really great SSMM pieces I really like, and mostly a [livejournal.com profile] calicogoat fanpost. Some of them are quite old and you've probably seen them all already, I'm also not very articulate in my fondness for these amazing pieces and they deserve a better introduction than my uncoordinated squeeing, but they're all worth checking out.

Also noteworthy is ~hellanim's  beautiful 12 Pictures from Snape's Life in beautiful monochromes with a dash of red and ~calicogoat's Flight of the Goldfinch which has Minerva and Severus battling a dragon on a flying machine and what could be more awesome than that?

Yes, I ought to be preparing lessons for Monday - I still need to finish my one-page-guide on how to write an essay, come up with fourteen mini-research topics for next Friday and a way to explain gender to the unenlightened.

Also, is it just me, or is Pottermore just a slightly less interactive, official, child-proofed version of HEX?
And I must say I diasagree with the house system. Not that I mind being placed in Ravenclaw, but what about a violin, a forest, and a preference for saving valuable spellbooks over school administration documents and teacher's property says "Ravenclaw"?

Hrumph. It's a nice time-sink so far, in a point-and-click kid of way. Anyone else on there, though? Let's be buddies (I'm SilverSky77).

And as for Minerva's backstory )

Just when I thought this day was bad and would stay bad I found the [livejournal.com profile] close_contrast masterlist full of SS/MM goodness, which includes a beautiful piece by [livejournal.com profile] sigune .

This one is called "Unspoken": Between Headmaster Snape and his Deputy Headmistress, what is essential remains unspoken."

I'm always incredibly excited when she's drawn something new because her art always speaks volumes with such precise, efficient means, if that makes sense. She has a way of capturing the expressions so beautifully, and their clothing style and the furniture she's shown them on is just perfect for them.

    So. Perfect.

(There are so many fics which look promising over there and at [livejournal.com profile] hp_beholder , I'm really missing out unless I head over there this weekend.)

Summary: Minerva has called on a childhood acquaintance to see how she is doing after her wedding and the difference between them could not be greater - one is a witch at the height of her power, the other had to make a lot of uncomfortable compromises for her new life. A/N: If you noticed the snitch in the other pictures you can see why this is one of her worst fears.

Whenever the summer had emptied the castle and the heat haze and sunlight preserved it in transient amber Minerva sat in her abandoned classroom with a glass of chilled wine, for one hour, looking at the studentless chairs.

Then the first war emptied some of them forever, as did the second; funerals were held, cemeteries filled.

She made two trips each November, wandering from grave to grave, leaving unheeded greetings, candles and remembered, and as the cold seeped into her bones a colder chill touched her: she feared another one might one day be for a member of her family.

Trust him, had been Albus' parting words.

If it had not been for the mask, this would not have been a problem, but it remained a fact that this was no longer the student she had known. The casualness with which he held it was more unnerving than the story he told, of clandestine meetings in graveyards and carefully omitted, hinted-at horrors the mask was a silent witness to. Minerva was not certain how much she could believe of it, but she had never been with any of his stories.

His wand was still lying on the desk. The young man's gaze had been fixed on it as soon as he had sat down to answer her questions, though sometimes his curiously dark eyes had looked up and pinned her with that same intensity she knew of old. Never long, though, they stole back quickly, hungrily.

She remembered something and noticed his pose, hunched on the edge of the chair, the troubled student rather than the man she was supposed to hire as a teacher. The former Death Eater whom Albus trusted. She made a decision. There was the briefest flicker in his expression when her hand closed around his wand and she raised it to him, but it was gone when he realised what she was doing.

"I believe this is yours," she said, holding out his wand. When his hand closed around it, his shoulders lost their hunch and she gained a first idea of the man he had become since she had seen him last.

Although this had been the question she had begun the interview with she thought it best to start fresh. She had not been interviewing the person who would be taking the position.

"Why are you applying for the Potions position, Mr Snape?"

He was standing as close to the door as he dared, and his carefully blank expression reminded her of a much younger man. Albus had given her Snape's wand and told her what he thought viable options might be, but had left the final decision to her, as the Deputy had the right to veto staffing decisions. In this case, she was very close to believing that Albus actually meant that.

A Death Eater turned was unlikely enough, but the fact that it was Severus Snape made it even less so. Minerva turned first the wand and then the mask in her hands, looking at the eye holes, trying to imagine Severus Snape's eyes, so like Hagrid's, looking through them. She couldn’t, didn't want to.

After melting out of Albus' shadow he had silently remained standing next to the doorway, curiously poised for flight, face impassive. When Albus had swept out again Glaucus rustled his feathers and fixed large yellow eyes on him silently, waiting for the boy to move. The boy. The murderer. The Death Eater. The young man.

"What position are you applying for, Mr Snape?" she asked, even though she knew. The spectre had not said a word, she wanted to hear his voice.

"That of the Potions Master, Professor," he answered silkily, tone and stance as pointedly non-committal as his face.

    "Come closer," she said.

He came to stand in front of her desk, ignoring the chair behind him, hands in his pockets like a boy she had known. This was not him, clearly. The mask was not the only evidence of that. He looked older, thinner, and she resisted the urge of offering bisquits or holding up the mask and demanding an explanation. Minerva also bit back the disappointment.

"Have a seat," she said instead.

"Where have you been? What happened to that broomstick?"
She looked up and decided that it would be best not to say anything, given the flaring nostrils and the flashing eyes. Instead, she raised her chin challengingly.

"Fifty points from Gryffindor. Yes, fifty. And you will be joining Mr Filch every afternoon at five this week to help him clean the castle."

A/N: I always wondered what it would be like for Hogwarts staff to have their children attend Hogwarts, and what that'd be like for the children. Being a teacher's child is bad enough without being a teacher's child at the only wizarding school in Britain.

Albus, another Gryffindor, she mused, maintained that the hat was impartial, but given that it was Gryffindor's, Minerva had her doubts. Over the years, she had gotten rather good at guessing which student would end up in which house, but there was still the moment when the hat made them one of hers, and she would spent the rest seven years denying the stronger connection she felt towards her own. She knew her grading was as impartial as possible, but she still worried, second-guessed, and feared.

This time, however, it was impossible to stay all too impartial, because seeing her, her nervous apprehension and joy at finally being here was like looking into a mirror.

She suppressed a smile as she raised the hat in invitation to sit down on the stool and shushed the voice that kept saying her own house's name, daring the hat to say any other.

    "Congratulations, Deputy Headmistress."

She was too tense to answer right away and thus only nodded, accepting the scroll with the student's names, securing the Sorting Hat in her other hand carefully. It weighed more than the faded exterior had made her anticipate and she fought the urge to put it on again.

Uncannily, Albus seemed to realise this, eyes twinkling, and Minerva briefly wondered what this expression would look like on a younger face.

    "Any instructions?"

"As you know most first years don't realise what the sorting entails. They will welcome the calming sight of a responsible adult."

    Minerva nodded.

Author's Notes: And does she ever. I\ve got little doubt that Minerva was a prefect in her day, it seems to fit. Her parents, and in my head, Minerva's parents are Vesta and Hamish McGillivray whom you may know from Crocky's fic universe, would have been proud, too.

I'm excited because posting for [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fest  begins today. <3

Apart from that, I'll be attending a talk on dyslexia and dyscalculia today. The occasion is my boss introducing courses for dyslexic and dyscalculic children to our tutoring centre. It'll without a doubt be very interesting and I wish I had had more time for some background reading to take away more from it.

Also, I'm still flat hunting and will call several prospective flats today, and hopefully get to look at them tomorrow, if these people are spontaneous.

Summary: "No, Minerva, there's nothing you could have done." - Minerva holding a vigil at Hermione's Basilisk-petrified body, Poppy Pomfrey lending some comfort and a hot cuppa.
Author's Notes: Less colourful than the previous silhouettes because I felt more drabness was appropriate to the scene. I don't know why Poppy's head turned out this big, but I suspect it's her wimple. Also, I like it when my art passes the Bechdel/Wallace test. Credit: texture by =cloaks.

Summary: Professor Sprout and Madam Rosmerta sharing a quiet moment away from the students. They're awesome and both are named after goddesses of plenty. Since it's the season of Harvest Festivals, this seemed fitting, and there have to be sparkles, because magic requires sparkles.
Notes: I do realise it's virtually impossible to tell who these people are. Especially with Rosmerta I was a bit at a loss, and Sprout's hat is most likely the only thing that shows it's meant to be her since the fly-away hair did not turn out that great. There's also an orange version, but I'm happier with theg green one.

I've been rather too happy about my discoveries on Etsy lately and decided to treat Crocky and myself.

First off, I got myself some earrings because I needed accessories that underline my decorous, understated professionalism, seeing as how I'm going to be a teacher and all-around respectable person soon:

And I got this for Crocky:

Quite apart from the possibilities to tattoo on her own arm, there's always the possibility to adorn either her uni work or deserving student's work with the Dark Mark.

Due to my exams and related stress I had completely forgotten that I actually submitted one of the prompts that I had been considering for [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fest .

    And it has been claimed!

I'm more excited about this than I probably should be. Still. ♥

I've decided to do a backdated pic-dump post with my ventures in April. Mostly for me, should I make some progress in the future and should wish to look back, and because this new hobby consumed some of my time in the first half of 2010.

So. Quick sketches and more detailed attempts at stuff. )
mothwing: A wanderer standing on a cliff, looking over a distant city (Book)
JK Rowling on single mothers, poverty and politics in the UK.

    from: «The Single Mother's Manifesto»
Yesterday’s Conservative manifesto makes it clear that the Tories aim for less governmental support for the needy, and more input from the “third sector”: charity. It also reiterates the flagship policy so proudly defended by David Cameron last weekend, that of “sticking up for marriage”. To this end, they promise a half-a-billion pound tax break for lower-income married couples, working out at £150 per annum.

I accept that my friends and I might be atypical. Maybe you know people who would legally bind themselves to another human being, for life, for an extra £150 a year? Perhaps you were contemplating leaving a loveless or abusive marriage, but underwent a change of heart on hearing about a possible £150 tax break? Anything is possible; but somehow, I doubt it. Even Mr Cameron seems to admit that he is offering nothing more than a token gesture when he tells us “it’s not the money, it’s the message”.

Nobody who has ever experienced the reality of poverty could say “it’s not the money, it’s the message”. When your flat has been broken into, and you cannot afford a locksmith, it is the money. When you are two pence short of a tin of baked beans, and your child is hungry, it is the money. When you find yourself contemplating shoplifting to get nappies, it is the money. If Mr Cameron’s only practical advice to women living in poverty, the sole carers of their children, is “get married, and we’ll give you £150”, he reveals himself to be completely ignorant of their true situation.

How many prospective husbands did I ever meet, when I was the single mother of a baby, unable to work, stuck inside my flat, night after night, with barely enough money for life’s necessities? Should I have proposed to the youth who broke in through my kitchen window at 3am? Half a billion pounds, to send a message — would it not be more cost-effective, more personal, to send all the lower-income married people flowers?

    Black eyes? Present.
    Hooked nose? Check.
Sallow skin? Well, slightly jaundiced, yes.
    Greasy hair? Arguably.
    Yellow, crooked teeth? Yep.
    Why, it's Snape.

    And Minerva. Black-haired, square-spectacled, emerald-robed, thin-lipped, big-eyebrowed favourite witch of mine.

I can't believe I'm this excited about that drawing course. Here's hoping that what with all the exam preparation I'll get myself to go at all. The first session will luckily be after two of my exams. Still.

To prepare I've tried to draw a face without reference. Noses? What are they for? And there are some issues with perspectives and an obvious lack of practice, but other than that, I'm proud.

Exam-preparation-wise I discovered a lovely collection of links about gay teachers, which ought to help with one of my topics.

    Filling in Forms

    Sunday, March 28th, 2010 11:20 pm
mothwing: The Crest of Cackle's Academy from The Worst Witch TV series. (Work)
Sometimes I suspect that my main reason for hoping I'll find a job as soon as possible come June is that I'll get around filing for state support. There are no words for how scared I am of those forms, filling in those forms some wrong way, getting things wrong in general.

They always make me seriously need cheering up, so I looked at funny HP comics on DA and tried to cheer myself up reading the "Help with Life " forum (short version of one of my favourite threads today: you're suicidal? Get your lazy ass to a gym already!).

I'm a big fan of ~ProtoWilson's comics which have Snape and a very short angry arts teacher OC insert (example here), which never fail to cheer me up.

Oh, and *rufftoon's Reality Shift strips, which are also awesome (the first one is here.)

Now I wish those forms would just either magically fill in themselves or dissolve...

    Title: Gone.
    Artist: [livejournal.com profile] mothwing .
    Rating: G.
Notes: an illustration of Crockywock's wonderful fanfics The Prince's Tale and The Silver Cat.
Summary: After Voldemort's defeat, Severus is released from both his debt and also from his connection to Lily, which is driven home by the fact that his patronus changed with his feelings for Minerva. The loss of his old patronus as well as the meaning of the new one cause very mixed feelings.

    Click for full view.

This is also the first time that I drew both humans and animals without any kind of reference, not even the trusted artist's dummy. I also practised doing rooms here, and I'm quite happy with how they turned out. Severus' face and expression, on the other hand, really still need some work. I'm rather happy with the cat, though, even though I consciously avoided doing fur, because my attempts at following Jab's pointers were pretty catastrophic and need some more work.

Heads of House brushing up relevant skills for the Yule Ball. Not entirely successful on the part of the Head of Slytherin, which is part of the reason why he ended leaving early with Karkaroff and skulking around among the rose bushes, leaving the hosting duty of the other guests to the other Heads of House.

Yes, this is silly, but I got tired of preparing for the teach-a-thon of doom.
