I'm excited because posting for [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fest  begins today. <3

Apart from that, I'll be attending a talk on dyslexia and dyscalculia today. The occasion is my boss introducing courses for dyslexic and dyscalculic children to our tutoring centre. It'll without a doubt be very interesting and I wish I had had more time for some background reading to take away more from it.

Also, I'm still flat hunting and will call several prospective flats today, and hopefully get to look at them tomorrow, if these people are spontaneous.

Summary: "No, Minerva, there's nothing you could have done." - Minerva holding a vigil at Hermione's Basilisk-petrified body, Poppy Pomfrey lending some comfort and a hot cuppa.
Author's Notes: Less colourful than the previous silhouettes because I felt more drabness was appropriate to the scene. I don't know why Poppy's head turned out this big, but I suspect it's her wimple. Also, I like it when my art passes the Bechdel/Wallace test. Credit: texture by =cloaks.

Summary: Professor Sprout and Madam Rosmerta sharing a quiet moment away from the students. They're awesome and both are named after goddesses of plenty. Since it's the season of Harvest Festivals, this seemed fitting, and there have to be sparkles, because magic requires sparkles.
Notes: I do realise it's virtually impossible to tell who these people are. Especially with Rosmerta I was a bit at a loss, and Sprout's hat is most likely the only thing that shows it's meant to be her since the fly-away hair did not turn out that great. There's also an orange version, but I'm happier with theg green one.

I've been rather too happy about my discoveries on Etsy lately and decided to treat Crocky and myself.

First off, I got myself some earrings because I needed accessories that underline my decorous, understated professionalism, seeing as how I'm going to be a teacher and all-around respectable person soon:

And I got this for Crocky:

I'm more excited about this than I probably should be. Still. ♥

I've decided to do a backdated pic-dump post with my ventures in April. Mostly for me, should I make some progress in the future and should wish to look back, and because this new hobby consumed some of my time in the first half of 2010.

So. Quick sketches and more detailed attempts at stuff. )

JK Rowling on single mothers, poverty and politics in the UK.

from: «The Single Mother's Manifesto»
Yesterday’s Conservative manifesto makes it clear that the Tories aim for less governmental support for the needy, and more input from the “third sector”: charity. It also reiterates the flagship policy so proudly defended by David Cameron last weekend, that of “sticking up for marriage”. To this end, they promise a half-a-billion pound tax break for lower-income married couples, working out at £150 per annum.

I accept that my friends and I might be atypical. Maybe you know people who would legally bind themselves to another human being, for life, for an extra £150 a year? Perhaps you were contemplating leaving a loveless or abusive marriage, but underwent a change of heart on hearing about a possible £150 tax break? Anything is possible; but somehow, I doubt it. Even Mr Cameron seems to admit that he is offering nothing more than a token gesture when he tells us “it’s not the money, it’s the message”.

Nobody who has ever experienced the reality of poverty could say “it’s not the money, it’s the message”. When your flat has been broken into, and you cannot afford a locksmith, it is the money. When you are two pence short of a tin of baked beans, and your child is hungry, it is the money. When you find yourself contemplating shoplifting to get nappies, it is the money. If Mr Cameron’s only practical advice to women living in poverty, the sole carers of their children, is “get married, and we’ll give you £150”, he reveals himself to be completely ignorant of their true situation.

How many prospective husbands did I ever meet, when I was the single mother of a baby, unable to work, stuck inside my flat, night after night, with barely enough money for life’s necessities? Should I have proposed to the youth who broke in through my kitchen window at 3am? Half a billion pounds, to send a message — would it not be more cost-effective, more personal, to send all the lower-income married people flowers?
JK Rowling.

Black eyes? Present.
Hooked nose? Check.
Sallow skin? Well, slightly jaundiced, yes.
Greasy hair? Arguably.
Yellow, crooked teeth? Yep.
Why, it's Snape.

I can't believe I'm this excited about that drawing course. Here's hoping that what with all the exam preparation I'll get myself to go at all. The first session will luckily be after two of my exams. Still.

To prepare I've tried to draw a face without reference. Noses? What are they for? And there are some issues with perspectives and an obvious lack of practice, but other than that, I'm proud.

Exam-preparation-wise I discovered a lovely collection of links about gay teachers, which ought to help with one of my topics.

Filling in Forms

mothwing: The Crest of Cackle's Academy from The Worst Witch TV series. (Work)
Sometimes I suspect that my main reason for hoping I'll find a job as soon as possible come June is that I'll get around filing for state support. There are no words for how scared I am of those forms, filling in those forms some wrong way, getting things wrong in general.

They always make me seriously need cheering up, so I looked at funny HP comics on DA and tried to cheer myself up reading the "Help with Life " forum (short version of one of my favourite threads today: you're suicidal? Get your lazy ass to a gym already!).

I'm a big fan of ~ProtoWilson's comics which have Snape and a very short angry arts teacher OC insert (example here), which never fail to cheer me up.

Oh, and *rufftoon's Reality Shift strips, which are also awesome (the first one is here.)

Now I wish those forms would just either magically fill in themselves or dissolve...

Rating: G.
Notes: an illustration of Crockywock's wonderful fanfics The Prince's Tale and The Silver Cat.
Summary: After Voldemort's defeat, Severus is released from both his debt and also from his connection to Lily, which is driven home by the fact that his patronus changed with his feelings for Minerva. The loss of his old patronus as well as the meaning of the new one cause very mixed feelings.

This is also the first time that I drew both humans and animals without any kind of reference, not even the trusted artist's dummy. I also practised doing rooms here, and I'm quite happy with how they turned out. Severus' face and expression, on the other hand, really still need some work. I'm rather happy with the cat, though, even though I consciously avoided doing fur, because my attempts at following Jab's pointers were pretty catastrophic and need some more work.

Heads of House brushing up relevant skills for the Yule Ball. Not entirely successful on the part of the Head of Slytherin, which is part of the reason why he ended leaving early with Karkaroff and skulking around among the rose bushes, leaving the hosting duty of the other guests to the other Heads of House.

Yes, this is silly, but I got tired of preparing for the teach-a-thon of doom.

Still playing around with silhouettes. I love silhouettes. And big noses.

Sadly, I'm still having some anatomy troubles - don't ask how long Severus' arm is in this picture.

It's fairly embarrassing to admit, but usually when I try drawing people and mean business I take Rebecca's wooden figure, put it in the position I want it in, take a photo, put that in a background layer and paint my human over that. ~Professional~, I know. Yesterday I tried painting without my anatomy reference. Behold. I think I'll stick to silhouettes for a while, they're fun.

mothwing: Gif of wolf running towards the right in front of large moon (Wolf)
Then I discovered some of the specimen that populate DA.

Oh boy.

TL;DR - or rather, too pink, didn't read - yeah, that's Severus' little sister, half mugle, is obviously not only in Gryffindor, but also stood up to their father and was sent away for that, she's also Sirius' One True Love, Remus is her best friend and she dislikes Peter. Note the animagus shape there.

At first I thought that this was some kind of rather overdone technicolour parody, but not so. Also, the artist (age 21) doesn't seem to realise that anything might be ... off about this character and is impervious to irony or subtly incredulous questions as to wtf is going on here.

There's apparently also a fic, but I don't think that anyone can be more mind-numbingly awesome than this picture.

I'm still hoping that this is a parody. Oh, please let this be a parody.

Whee, water.

So things aren't going too great with my exam preparations and I'm scared stiff (lack of concentration being a major factor here - I blame the meds), but at least I discovered what I think are good hues to use for skin colours. I realise her nose is weird, her shoulders are broader than my bishie!Severus' (because I can't do human anatomy), and the background shows that I ran out of patience and motivation, but I'm new to this stuff, and considering that I last seriously drew something in 2001 before the dog and the dragon the other day I'm hugely inflated with pride here.

Severus and Minerva patrolling the dungeons

Another thing that has me in raptures today was reading through [livejournal.com profile] isurrendered , which everybody needs in their lives and ought to consider watching. It's a community which this meme spawned:
"THE MEME
1. Comment to this post with "I surrender!" and I'll assign you the basis of some TV show idea. (Science fiction show, medical drama, criminal procedure, etc...)
2. Create a cast of characters, including the actors who'd play them
3. Add in any actor photos, character bios and show synopsis that you want.
4. Post to your own journal this community!"
The submissions are all so awesome I'm sad they don't exist IRL - they have the most interesting plots, great characters, surprisingly gender- and race-balanced casts and seem to have spawned their own fandoms and fanfics already. I might go back and do recs for individual shows on there, but everybody needs to check this out for themselves, anyway.
mothwing: Silhouettes of Minerva and Severus facing each other, kissing in one panel of the gif (SSMM)
I wrote this for Crocky years ago, while she was on her Highland trip with her Chapel Choir. It is a silly little thing, now, and, like so many fics of that time, an AU, but I love it, nonetheless. There are, sadly, a lot of minor mistakes in it, I hope you don't mind too much.

Title: Stalking Severus Snape - A story in 25 receipts and shopping lists.
Pairings: Minerva/Severus.
Author's Note: I would like to apologise for any errors concerning Morrison's products or their prices if they are being portrayed inaccurately by this. I found it very hard to find accurate prices for the items I needed for the late nineties, or even which products they offered back then.
Summary: The items in this file were all retrieved while supervising the convicted and evicted Death Eater and Half-Blood Severus Snape, who was sentenced to the destruction of his wand and exile from the Wizarding community. He is being covertly supervised until his next hearing to ensure he is no longer a threat. See excerpts below.

In a part of the mines without dwarven (architectural) remains, that is. I also love how they seem to have used the exact filter set the guys who did the Twilight movie used just to ram home the fact that the story of this movie is really Serious Business, and serious business requires an excess of blues and grey rather than pinks and yellows, apparently. I liked movies which are able to create this effect without filters, but tastes differ.

So, we watched the newish Harry Potter trailer this morning and while there are many things in there that I really like, there are also things that I did not enjoy, unsurprisingly. One was the gollum-inferi and the interior of the cave. Maybe there is not much creative leeway with caves.

In case you're worried about spoilers )

Also, while I am quite weary of the changes they made, I am looking forward to this movie because in spite of the gratuitous filter use (look at those colours!) it is so stunningly pretty. Adaptation-wise I doubt that these people's assessment of the movie is wrong, though - concentration of romance and changes to the ending sound exactly like what I would have expected. The spoilers of the movie found here and here also don't really make me that exited about this.

There is a site here on which you can upload pictures of you and your partner/friend/Snape to generate a picture of prospective babies.
Good in theory, the programme is about as accurate as the Sims baby generator and has not incorporated even the most basic facts of genetics. When I compared myself to the picture I received after submitting my parents I can't say that it's good for actual baby planning, but it's an excellent toy.

Books 24 - 35

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 04:14 pm
mothwing: A wanderer standing on a cliff, looking over a distant city (Book)
I can't believe I forgot about this thing again. I have no clue if this list is complete.

35.

The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood.
I LOVE. This book. It's absolutely unputdownable. There are not many books which nearly make me tap my foot during lectures, looking forward to the break so I can get back to my book, this is one of them. Absolutely great.

34.

Making Money, by Terry Pratchett.
Eerie. I had a lot of Going Postal flashbacks, reading this. Again great to see more of Vetinari, but on the whole... Where is the author of Small Gods?

33.

Going Postal, by Terry Pratchett.
By far not my favourite discworld novel, although it does have it's highlights. Not many, but they're there. When I read it back in '06, I thought that it's good to see more of Vetinari, and I liked Spike a lot, but on the whole... I never thought I'd say this, but where's the author of Small Gods?

32.

Imperium, by Robert Harris.
Great read. Experiencing Cicero's very impressive career and his various schemes through the eyes of his slave Tiro is interesting enough, and the amounts of history textbook personalities around him add to the appeal of that book. The probably most interesting character in this novel for me was not Julius Caesar, or the obscenely rich Crassus, or the notorious Verres I know from the speeches, but his Cicero's wife, Terentia.
I cannot, for the life of me, understand, why he divorced her later in life. Of course he must have his reasons, very probably political reasons, knowing the two. Still. I didn't find much information on her, but what is known seems to suggest that she was a very independent woman who knew what she wanted, and even though there never seemed a lot of romance between her and her husband, she always supported him. She invested considerable amounts of money into his career, and stood by him while he was exiled. After more than thirty years of marriage, he left her for his rich young ward who was no older than twenty - about ten years younger than his daughter.
31.

Dragonsbane (albeit in German, Der Schwarze Drache), by Barbara Hambly.
I love this book. It's not the best fantasy novel there is, it's not that well written, there are whole passages which are ... long, most of all. Still, again, what makes this novel for me, is the characters. The main character is a witch in her late thirties, she's torn between pursuing what she feels is her true calling, her career as a witch, and her family, her husband, down-to-earth Lord John and her two sons. It's great to read a fantasy novel which is not about people in their twenties for once.
30.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, by J. K. Rowling.
29.

Carpe Jugulum, by Terry Pratchett.
I am an Agnes fangirl. There should be more Agneses in literature. It also contains some of the best quotes on literature, and I've always meant to write an essay comparing Granny Weatherwax's and Vorbis's views.
28.

Wyrd Sisters, by Terry Pratchett.
This is the book which made me love Terry Pratchett. It's the second book I bought, and when I read it, I fell in love with Death and Granny Weatherwax at first sight.

27.

Witches Abroad, by Terry Pratchett.
26.

Lords and Ladies, by Terry Pratchett.
I doubt that there is anyone who dislikes this book.
25.

The End of Alice,  by A. M. Homes.
Another very recommended book. It's very well written, and the way it forces you into the psyche of the abusive, paedophile character and narrator of the story is deeply disturbing, but also very captivating.

24.

Incidences in the life of a slavegirl, by Linda Brent.
I really recommend this book, although the main character's story is horrible. Not an easy read.

Ok. Back to The Handmaid's Tale.

Bad joke

Ok, ok, this is only funny because I have been awake for 36 hours and had just survived six hours of kindergarten - when it struck me - you know what?

LORD VOLDEMORT IS A RETRIBUTION PALA!

Why?

Because he has to let others do the damage for him?
Because whenever he tries to deal damage he needs to apply himself to the services of the guild healer instantly?

No!

Well, not only.

Because he placed Nagini in a friggin' BUBBLE!!!!

That absolutely killed me when I thought of that while cooking my lunch. I had to share with my brother, who raised an appreciative eye-brow at the giggling heap that was his sister and then launched into this great big explanation on why he could also be a mage and how this and that class was more likely but no, no, I was quite right, a retribution paladin he could be.

Awesome.

My brain is melting. Will now go and get some sleep.
And then finally go and catch up on all your entries! I really haven't been around much, reading, for the past weeks. Sorry about that. And I have to find out what that recent LJ suckage was all about.

Someone snarked the entire DH. It can get a bit long sometimes as he sometimes just takes the original text and pastes that, but all in all, there are enough funny bits to make it well worthwhile to read it.
mothwing: A wanderer standing on a cliff, looking over a distant city (Book)
There was an amazing amount of people waiting in front of Waterstone's at Piccadilly even by the time we got there, which was around 4pm, most of them dressed up, some in really complicated and crafty outfits. The mood these guys were in was really great, it was basically one gigantic, vaguely scary party. There were a lot of spontaneous discussions among strangers prompted by signs or dresses about the series, too, it was just awesome. I am not usually a fan of great, big crowds of people, but those guys in the queue were fun to be around.

There were people from the various internet sites handing out stuff, even, like SnapeCasters who handed out Snape's Personal Shampoo, a lady who went round offering to paint lightning-shaped scars and Dark Marks (we did not go for it, though), and all sorts of people handing out flyers of sites we all know. We really should have been wearing Pensieve tees, I thought later on.

We learned that some of those guys had been there since Wednesday, camping outside the book store, in spite of the heavy rainfalls, and many had come from other countries, too, flown in only for the event. Queuing next to us were several "Beauxbaton students" from France, but there were also Italian quidditch players, Eastern European house elves, Dutch Gryffindors and German Gryffindors. There were Death Eaters who invited Crocky to "duel" the DA with them - or would have, if the cowards had showed up (thus, the Death Eaters automatically won after the period of grace they had given the DAers was up). There was a "Dumbledore", there was a Mad-eye Moody, there were the four founders, there were the Malfoys, there were two Trelawneys, there was a Firebolt, there was Hogwarts, there were several people with Hedwigs in cages - in short, it was a lot of fun which truly frightened my grandma, who saw it on telly.

Crocky has taken these great pics:

mothwing: A wanderer standing on a cliff, looking over a distant city (Book)
I hate spoilers.
Well, I love spoilers.

I can NEVER resist them, and thus I sometimes trawl spoiler forums/communities, looking for titbits on sites which provide a healthy mixture of hilarious rumours and true bits of information. Ok, my fault, but I never expected to find anything remotely... true that's actually of tremendous importance. I never expect great big leaks.

Things like the scans .... No. A peak at the first page, or the first chapter, yes. Actually reading all of it... never. But of course, not everyone thinks like that.

There are evil people on LJ who use great, big, fucking blinking icons which list the characters who are going to die according to a suspiciously real-looking scan of the entire fucking book which has been floating around online. Max had warned me, I had forgotten to be careful, I saw it. To make matters even better, there are people who post a list of the characters who die with the fucking page numbers - in fucking reviews on fucking ff.net.

Awesome.

Can someone please tell me that those scans are fakes?

Please?

*gasp*

I only just realised it's the 14th.

One week until book 7.

Omgomgomg.

No, this does not have content. But... only one week! How did that happen?

Midnight Release

Who else went to a midnight release?

I think I am going to get a decent night's sleep before I attempt to say anything about anything, though, I've only had two hours and am off to the last session of my course now.

All in all, I really liked it, but it was too fast-paced for me, and although I was happy because of the things that did end up in the movie of course I missed certain things although I realise that this film is not made for rabid fans, but for an US American, general audience. Who probably do not care too much about the correct characterisation of characters and a correct adaptation. I liked the filming, and loved seeing the characters again, although I sure as hell don't know if our uninitiated brethren out there are able to get anything without having read the books. Still, there were many things I loved.

All those dressed-up fans were extra entertainment, adorned with different scarves, moaning about different parts of the movie that were not up to their standards ("And Sirius was played by a different dog!!!"). No Slytherins about, though, only Gryffies and Ravies, curiously, and the things they cared for were not even on my list of potentially important things.

Ok, off now.

I died when I read that. If anyone is interested in the photo, it is for sale here, and the money goes to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Some of these questions are seriously weird.

[profile] madmaxime  posted this on the Pensieve and I thought it was hilarious.

1. Post a list of fandoms.
2. Have your friends guess your favorite character from each fandom.

3. When guessed, add to the list your favourite characters and a sentence explaining why you like them.

Revelio! )

21.7.

*dances around* There is soo going to be another reading session with Julez and Crocky!!

Well, if Julez is not busy graduating, that is. Do you graduate in July in GB? I hope she's not. She won't be able to. Although she's probably going to be working on her dissertation around that time, soo... who knows. Still.

I can't believe it.

Harry Potter and the what?

Okaaay... Can't say I'm a big fan of the title, but now I'm really curious.

And at the same time, I don't want to read book seven. At all. The end of an era...

No, I'm not a Sue.

I was lured over to another HP RPGing site by a very im-por-tant user from the first of those sites I wasted my time on who is even more im-por-tant there. Blegh. Apparently, there are less Sues there than on the first one. And it is true, there are indeed fewer people who would qualify as Sues, but that is only due to the fact that there are fewer people around in the first place.

This is what I found while browsing around, the profile of someone who said somewhere that she does not like Sues and likes only good RPGing. I tossed in a few paragraphs because it made it easier for me to read, the original version of her profile did not have any.

Naaaah, that is not a Sue. That is a normal RPGer. Whose parents die... twice. Ah, well...

- especially [personal profile] lordhellebore, before you open the link below, please ensure that you have taken the following precautions:

  1. You are sitting firmly on a chair which would prevent you from falling in case you faint.
  2. You have a plastic bag ready in case you feel the urge to vomit.
  3. There are no sharp edges or hard objects on the surface of your desk or in close proximity to you which might inflict an injury, should you feel the sudden urge to bring your forehead in sharp contact the surface of your desk.

Done?

Here goes. Oh - WARNING: graphic sex, poisonous prose.

I knew there were fanfics in German, I knew that there was slash in German, but but but ... well, I ought to have known, but... this is just... SOO bad!

For those who do not speak German or do not bother to open the link - it is a non-magic AU one shot featuring Ron and Harry as gay stewards on bord of a plane, and to make things even better, it features Draco, who falls in love with Harry's butt at first sight and decides to ask him if he will join him in the toilet for an intimate tête-à-tête. Attracted by the Draco's beautiful behind, Harry complies and falls in love with Draco, but will this love have a future?

If I am not off my  mind, I have just seen Sean Biggerstaff.

Not sure if that's possible at all, but someone who looks exactly like him, just with a few spots, has just been in this library.

I must be getting old. Or I have just avoided enormous embarrassment or lost a great chance by not asking him for an autograph.

Hm.

Religious feelings and sensitivities are funny things. I used to think I did not have any. But, odd things happen to you in the vastness of the internet.

Being raised by vaguely protestant, northern-German biologists did not help much in that department. I used to think there was really nothing, no insult to my religion which could bother me, and at times I have felt that I only declared myself Christian to be allowed to say rude things about my religion and how its practiced, because I know a lot of really hypocritic Christians out there who only will admit criticism might be true if it comes from other Christians. Well, that attitude ended long ago, but somehow, I was still thinking I did not have any particular sensitivities anyone had to worry about a great deal.... Well, not true. There are the obvious ones you get when you see someone messing up your religion by what they do with it and use it for, which I get every time they abuse a good idea for the sake of something stupid and/or inhumane. But other than that? Critical thoughts on the historical person Christ? No problem. Satire? No problem. Christ in art? No problem. Historic novels on my religion and it's key figures? No problem.
Yes, we are heading towards a "but I found out I was wrong, when" here, so here it is -

BUT - I had to notice I was wrong when I read an innocent thread on the RPG board I waste my time on, curiously. It had been written by a girl who RPs a Care of Magical Creatures class, I think, and she decided to do a special Easter lesson (completely out of context of her usual lessons, but never mind...) and explained to her class:

"Jesus was a powerful magician who lived 2000 years ago, and he used magic to..."

I have never, ever seen me flare up like this at something so trivial. I felt genuinely insulted. I just have no clue why. It is not unusual for people to make Jesus as cuddly and fluffy as possible, and usually, I just roll my eyes. It is also pretty common to yank him out of context and paste him into a story as a little unfunny extra. Somehow, it usually does not bother me, but in this case, I was so close to sending her a mail with a rant about the matter...

My religion is not HP compatible. Hm.
